In other words, they’ll be watching for security threats in role-playing games like World of Warcraft and virtual worlds like Second Life, where large populations interact pseudonymously. The office’s February report on its data mining activities includes a description of “Reynard,” a foxy “seedling effort” to begin such studies.

What, exactly, would video game terrorism look like? The report is vague, saying only that Reynard would “identify the emerging social, behavioral and cultural norms” in such spaces and “then apply the lessons learned to determine the feasibility of automatically detecting suspicious behavior and actions in the virtual world.” It isn’t clear what behavior would qualify as “suspicious” in online games—many of which, after all, center around sessions in which groups conspire to coordinate attacks on their enemies.

Reynard is of a piece with the office’s larger data mining project, which aims to “discover or locate a predictive pattern or anomaly indicative of terrorist or criminal activity.” Game worlds are just one of many corners of cyberspace being covered. The report acknowledges that “application of results from these research projects may ultimately have implications for privacy and civil liberties,” adding that the office is therefore “also investing in projects that develop privacy protecting technologies.” This attention to individual rights, it declares, is “a unique research effort within the intelligence community.”

He is not alone. Many computer gamers around the world are paying hard cash to gain an edge

over others in the online fantasy world. Other games which attract such “trading” include Maple

Story, Ultima Online, EverQuest, Asheron’s Call and Star Wars Galaxies.
Players have been known to buy virtual money, rare items in the game or even entire characters

with their associated powers and accompanying weapons. As it takes a lot of hard work, not to

mention time and luck, to attain these virtual goods, the high prices they command seem

reasonable. However, World of Warcraft player Eric Chua thinks otherwise. “It does take a lot

of time and effort to build a character to a level where you actually start to enjoy

thegameplay,” said the 29-year-old advertising brand manager. “But the current market rate is

just not something I would be willing to pay for.” A scan of auction site Ebay produced over

700 results for various items of the game on sale. The highest-priced item is a World of

Warcraft account sold by a New Yorker for US$5,000.
Meanwhile, to raise the game level of a character in the shortest time, known in gaming

parlance as “leveling”, online hawkers are charging up to US$360. These vendors will log into

your account and play the game for you. Indeed, the industry is so lucrative that China-based

sweatshops and established companies, such as Miami-based Internet Gaming Entertainment (IGE),

have been set up just to ‘farm’. The word is used to describe the activity of playing the game

to acquire as much gold or items as possible for resale. Selling skills and weapons online,

however, is frowned upon and banned by Blizzard Entertainment, the games developer of World of

Warcraft. It has threatened to take legal action against individuals ‘who engage in this

inappropriate activity’.
World of Warcraft was launched late November 2004. Since March of 2005, the company has removed

more than 800 players suspected of farming from its servers. Nonetheless, World Cyber Games

organizers Herman Ng can understand where the allure of buying gold lies. “MMORPGs have very

immersive environments. So whatever you possess in that world, your friends can see it. To

obtain a rare item or to be an advanced player gives you bragging rights in a way,” said the

27-year-old. Others, however, feel adding real money into the equation taints the value of the

play and destroys the enjoyment of the game. Audio engineer Willy Goh, 28, said: “I would never

buy World of Warcraft Gold because the fun is in the journey. The sense of achievement is in

finally killing that ultra-big monster, not in amassing items or cheap gold.” IT writer Chan

Chi-Loong, 29, agrees. “Some people might feel that their time is precious, so to get the

maximum enjoyment from the game, they pay for a short cut to the process,” he said. “But if you

get to the advanced level too easily, it loses its value. In that sense, I prefer to just enjoy

the game for what it is.”

More than 500 individual achievements will be available in world exploration, player-versus-environment, player-versus-player and professions. According to Blizzard, these rewards will be “purely cosmetic” and won’t affect actual gameplay.
The new action bar will include a button that will bring up the achievements window. Achievements will show up much like quests and will display the name, description, completion date and progress bar. In addition, you can look at other players’ achievements by right-clicking their portrait. Yes, it’s just another way to compare how much time you waste compared to others.
The Wrath of the Lich King expansion is currently in alpha testing stages and presumably will be released later this year, but Blizzard hasn’t given an official date just yet. This will be the second expansion pack for World of Warcraft and the first one, The Burning Crusade, sold millions of copies in the first day of release.
As a longtime World of Warcraft player, it’s very interesting seeing the game morph into something a bit more console-like. PvP battle is now heavily weighted towards quick arena combat (unless it’s a bunch of paladins and druids fighting each other). Achievements will now make the game seem more like Halo or Resistance Fall of Man.

Officials have defended their response to China’s latest product safety disaster, saying that authorities have detained 19 people and are questioning 78 others about how the banned chemical melamine was added to milk sold to Sanlu Group Co., China’s biggest milk powder producer.

The government is sending groups of officials to Hebei, Guangdong and Heilongjiang provinces and the Inner Mongolia region to inspect dairy companies, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said.

The teams will also work with local officials in removing all substandard milk powder from the market, it said in a statement on its Web site.

Chinese officials said they were not alerted until Monday, even though Sanlu received complaints as early as March and company tests in August found the milk powder contained melamine, a chemical used in plastics that is banned in food products.
Sanlu ordered a recall Thursday.

At least 432 Chinese babies who were fed Sanlu milk are suffering from kidney stones, Health Minister Gao Qiang said at a news conference Saturday. One baby reportedly died.

ealand dairy farmers’ group that owns 43 percent of Sanlu Group said Sunday it had urged the company to recall the product as early as six weeks ago.

Fonterra Co-operative Group said it had urged the Sanlu Group board to call for a full recall of the milk powder on Aug. 2, the day the board was notified?nearly six weeks before the recall action was taken.

Calls to Sanlu’s head office in Shijiazhuang, a city southwest of Beijing, rang unanswered Sunday.

“The Sanlu Group should shoulder major responsibility for this,” Gao said. He gave no indication of what penalties the Chinese dairy might face but said those responsible would “be dealt with severely.”

The incident was an embarrassing failure for China’s product safety system, which was overhauled in an attempt to restore consumer confidence after a string of recalls and warnings abroad over tainted toothpaste, faulty tires and other goods.

The milk scandal is especially damaging because it involves a major Chinese food company and the government expects such companies to act as industry role models for safety and quality.
Gao said the melamine may have been added to milk to fool quality tests after water was added to fraudulently increase its volume. Melamine is rich in nitrogen, and standard tests for protein in food ingredients measure nitrogen levels.

The officials said some tainted powder was exported to Taiwan but none was sent to other foreign markets.
